If I just take a standard smart parts impulse, how much can I upgrade it? I can replace the frame and pretty much everything right?

Every part can be messed with.  The lease likely to be changed are probably the solenoid and HPV, but it can be done.  Every other part is up to you.

Yup, the Impulse can be very easily upgraded. Their are tons of parts out there you can mix and match and the technical side of it is simple as well.

Just out of curiosity what mods can you do to the solenoid and HPV?  Those are about the only parts of my Impulse I've yet to upgrade or modify.

I had been poking around the other day and found that someone had removed the Imp 'noid and milled out the body to install a Shocker noid.  Not sure what that would do for you.  You can remove the HPV.  It would give a cleaner look at the risk of blowing you solenoid away by accident.
