I recently picked up a custom milled Imp body and it is brushed silver metal where it was worked on, but the front and back are still the original black.  What is the easiest way to remove the remaining paint?

these guns were never "painted" originally they are anodized. anodization is an electrolysis process where the part is charged and dipped in an acid solution then into dye then sealed to keep its color and is a coating much like rust but not detrimental to your aluminum parts. almost all aluminum paintball parts are annoed because it protects the soft aluminum from being easly damaged.

if its the original anno the only way to get it off is sand it or etch it if you decide to sand it use a high grit paper like at least 400 so it doesn't mangle your body lines. if you send it to a shop for anno they will strip the old stuff off for you and put new anno on. have your gun reanodized when you are done! it protects your body from scratches and the elements!

As.  So they are really dyed.  Interesting.  I was hoping to be able to do some chemical removal instead of sanding since I am lazy by nature.  Thanks for the info.

It's only a simple fastback so nothing special, but once I build the rest, I'll post up with the others on my profile.  Who knows, if I get bored, perhaps I'll take a grinder to it myself.

there is a chemical way to strip it i just dont recall what the substance is andprolly involvesbattery acid and alot of heat so i wldnt try it unless you totally know what you are doing

NO GRINDERS!!!! lol there are a few machinists on here who are reasonable and could help you cut it into a totally badass imp

Oven cleaner will remove some anno but you'll need to sand the rest. Really depends how you want to refinish it. Bead blasting will take it down to raw metal but leave it smooth as silk.

oven cleaner will also eat the metal and screw up your tolerances..... if you feel it nessicary to media blast make sure its something low impact like glass aluminium is soft so its really easy to mess up.... its slow but the best method to use so as to not impact the metal and possibly mess up your tolerances is to polish it off

even doing the outside can be detrimental to the metal prime example stripped some aluminum a arms for my quad with oven cleaner and it weakened the metal so much they snapped on me...... so just dont do it period lol
