The below paragraph was taken from the Paintball Business Journal regarding 50 caliber paintballs...

Rumors abound that a major part of the upcoming business marriage between Bill/Adam Gardner and Richmond Italia and the forming of GI Milsim, will be the introduction of 50 caliber paintballs and markers. You've probably been hearing the term "Paintball 2.0" which all from the GI Milsim camp have been using. Well it looks like the 2.0 will soon become "paintball .50." We've been talking to several people involved (but unnamed for now) that are saying a move to 50 caliber could almost double the number of balls you'll get in a case of paint, with only a $1 or $2 increase in price. We've also heard there's been extensive testing already done and the the impact of a 50 caliber paintball is less painful and the ball break factor is about the same.

at first i thought this was just smart parts, but now it seems PE have joined in. This seems all fine and dandy for poppet guns such as the Ego and Impulse because they can just make a smaller bolt and an insert. Not sure how they are gonna work out spool valves and blow back guns though.

Apparently quite a few companies are looking into this.

I don't see it working out without being really expensive. Every one will need new .50 barrel kits which will cost tons of money. You'll need a new hopper. You'll need a new gun or an upgrade it for your current. And somebody will HAVE to keep making .68 paintballs because of all the players that have older guns that won't have upgrade kit or anything. This means companies have a choice. They can split their factories up, one half making .68 the other .50 or they could make all of one type. Either way the prices of paint might go up because less people will switch to  making one caliber of paint, thus the remaining companies will have more of a monopoly and be able to charge more because of less competition. Going to .50 would also upset the paintball leagues I think. They'll prolly end up having to make a .50 league or something because people will complain at tourneys and stuff about somebody having an advantage and such. If I'm looking at this the wrong way though feel free to correct me. Maybe this could be a good thing for the pb industry

Hmmm, this is interesting. I'll have to do more research, but it seems like the smaller the ball would equal less weight...thus less distance. Or maybe, the same PSI on a smaller object would create more or inertia...?

When was the last time you heard of players complaining about how painful it is? Honestly...

Well at least it isn't being forced on us yet.
